Meet your accomplice: the rain barrel.

A rain barrel is, well, a barrel that collects and stores rainwater from your roof that would otherwise be lost. Typically 55 gallons in volume, rain barrels are composed of a drum, hose, PVC couplings and filter grate to keep debris, insects and other nasty things out of your fresh water.

What this means for you? Well, with the rising price of water, an increasing amount of folks are “harvesting” the rain to save money. And considering the wet spring we’ve been having, there’ll be plenty to go around.

What is a compost?

“Going Green” has many connotations, and some of the simplest and cheapest ways to save the planet doesn’t include buying a $40,000 hybrid vehicle. If you’re a green thumb and like to see beautiful things grow, there’s a very easy way to do it: start a compost!

Compost is a very dark soil that contains many rich nutrients that plants absolutely love. Combining all your organic and decomposable trash in one container—food scraps, egg shells, raked leaves—this matter breaks down through the use of bacteria, fungi and worms to create plant food that is one of the best substitutes for dangerous and expensive fertilizers. You’re saving space in landfills and giving your green friends living outside your house the nutrition they not only want but thrive in.

Mulch ado about mulch!

One of the less glamorous parts of spring cleaning in your yard is when dealing with mulch. In the fall, it’s always “hurry up and heap it on”, but then there’s the matter of cleaning it up to prepare for new growth. It’s also important to understand where and when to apply it in the spring.

Many perennials need protection during the winter’s elements, which is where mulch comes into play. While some perennials will successfully breath through thick layers of mulch, it’s wise not to risk it. If your ground is thawing, which is around late winter or early spring, be sure to get mulch of your plants to avoid smothering them. It’ll help you to easily spot emerging plant sprouts, too. Once they do start peeking out and growing into adolescence, then you can add your mulch around them.

When it comes to applying new mulch to your vegetable garden or flower bed, evaluate your old mulch to see if it’s rotting. If not, you can still use it. Rake it to the side. Put down your protein-rich soil or compost and then rake the new and old mulch on top. When it is time to plant, very carefully move the mulch away from the area you’re planning to plant.
